Er is kennelijk iets mis met je aspell installatie. Als ik dit commando op mijn Mac draai (maar ik heb aspell 0.60.6), dan wordt auto's als correct geaccepteerd. Als ik een foute spelling neem, bijvoorbeeld:

 $  echo "auto'x" |/opt/local/bin/aspell --lang=nl -a
@(#) International Ispell Version 3.1.20 (but really Aspell 0.60.6.1)
& auto'x 5 0: auto's, auto, autobox, atol, detox

dan zie je dus dat auto's als correct alternatief wordt gegeven.

Het lijkt me dat jouw aspell woorden met een 's als meervoud niet kent en dan tot de conclusie komt dat het twee woorden moeten zijn, nl. auto en 's (de laatste van bijvoorbeeld 's avonds). En daarom dus die spatie ertussen zet.
