Re: [NTG-pdftex] [ pdftex-Bugs-695 ] Confusion when changing kerning settings within a paragraph
Hi Hans, removing those features is trivial. The question is: - is it worthwhile to have them, at least with some limitations? - are they already used and hence removing them can cause trouble? AFAIK only Robert Schlicht and Ulrich Dirr have been playing with them a little bit, but nobody has made any use of those in serious work. Please correct me if I am wrong. Of course I am happy to play with those features when luatex is ready for that. Thanh On Sun, Nov 19, 2006 at 11:07:38PM +0100, Hans Hagen wrote:
Hi Thanh,
I think it was not a good decision to introduce those new features, as they touch a very sensitive area of tex and it's hard to get them right. I wonder whether it is better to discard them all.
removing them is tricky since they may be in use already but don't spend to much time on fixing things that are hard to fix in current tex; once luatex is in a state where fontdata has no longer the global properties and where we can have more control over font related featurss, you can probably rewrite most of the code in a cleaner way Hans

Hi Thanh

i think that, since they're in there, they are used; that has always been the problem with pdftex being a front runner ... eager users start using things; however, we can make a remark that in pdftex 2 these features may become obsolete and be replaced by more controllable generic mechanisms ; and also a remark that side effects will not be dealt with; this permits usage in controlled situations after all, hz and protruding also have side effects (due to global font data) ; users cannot expect wonders from you within the current tex

i do support them but i dunno if users use them

that will be the case in a couple of months (taco is now going to open up the font mechanisms) by that time all font extensions that you made need to be revised anyway (hz and protruding and such) , so you'll have a busy future ahead -) Hans ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: 038 477 53 69 | fax: 038 477 53 74 | www.pragma-ade.com | www.pragma-pod.nl -----------------------------------------------------------------

Possible: not really. Planned: yes, definately. Taco
