That wasn't a rant (and it was with tongue in cheek), that was a try to state a fact that David didn't make clear: That his problems (and his fix) where on Windows. What would be useful is discussion of particular problems that need
to be addressed, with the objective of 1) educating those of us with
experience slanted to one platform and 2) coming up with solutions.
There is no shortage of problems:
1) every "#Ifdef PLATFORM" in the sources. In some cases "PLATFORM"
seems to have been abused to mean "MS_Visual_C" and may not be
appropriate when using a cross-compiler. In others it may have been
used where an autoconf #defined value would be better.
2) every teTeX shell script
