Hi, I recently learned that MacKichan Software is shipping pdfTeX (and a bunch of other web2c software, e.g. Omega) with their products Scientific Word and Scientific Workplace. Is there any contact between them and the pdfTex or web2c developers? It was new to me (and Hans). It will be interesting to see how they comply with section 3. Best regards Martin PS: The pdfTeX they distribute is 1.00b-pretest-200202* -- Martin Schröder, MS@ArtCom-GmbH.DE ArtCom GmbH, Lise-Meitner-Str 5, 28359 Bremen, Germany Voice +49 421 20419-44 / Fax +49 421 20419-10

I suggest you write and ask for your copy of the source of Scientific Word. The answer will probably be that pdftex is a free-standing program which they call. Sebastian

since pdftex is free this is ok, but (1) they should clearly mention it somewhere in their documentation (2) there should be a clear indication of a version/release number [users need to be aware of the more general tex solution as well as the fact that they may be using an old version not adapted to the latest pdf developments] i suggest that you ask them for a copy of the software so that you can check this / advise them Hans ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE | pragma@wxs.nl Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: +31 (0)38 477 53 69 | fax: +31 (0)38 477 53 74 | www.pragma-ade.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- information: http://www.pragma-ade.com/roadmap.pdf documentation: http://www.pragma-ade.com/showcase.pdf -------------------------------------------------------------------------

these are not obligations on MacKichan, all they can be is a request.
The _obligation_ on MacKichan is that they
a) do not claim copyright or obscure the existing copyrights
b) make the source available
c) release the source of any improvements
I am willing to bet much money that they have not followed b)

i assume that pointing to the place where the source of pdftex can be downloaded is enough? I am not sure, They have to ensure the source is available for a certain number of years, not just assume it is. Sebastian

No. Either they deliver the source with the binaries or they include a written offer (to deliver them at essentially no cost) valid for at least three years. Read the GPL for a full explanation. :-) Best regards Martin -- Martin Schröder, MS@ArtCom-GmbH.DE ArtCom GmbH, Lise-Meitner-Str 5, 28359 Bremen, Germany Voice +49 421 20419-44 / Fax +49 421 20419-10

Hi Martin, there is a bug in pdftex: when a file in included at say width 3cm then a later inclusion of the same file at say 20cm width results in the second instance having no fonts! i'll send you a file Hans ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE | pragma@wxs.nl Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: +31 (0)38 477 53 69 | fax: +31 (0)38 477 53 74 | www.pragma-ade.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- information: http://www.pragma-ade.com/roadmap.pdf documentation: http://www.pragma-ade.com/showcase.pdf -------------------------------------------------------------------------

This must be a problem with your viewer -- here both instances have fonts. I take it that what you see is not like the attached png? Here both Jaws and AR5 have both images with fonts. Have you set your AR to display Greek Text below a certain pixel size? And are the fonts maybe smaller than that? Best regards Martin -- Martin Schröder, MS@ArtCom-GmbH.DE ArtCom GmbH, Lise-Meitner-Str 5, 28359 Bremen, Germany Voice +49 421 20419-44 / Fax +49 421 20419-10

ah, thanks for testing; strange enough when i open the smoothing prefs, the effects cycle (small / large yes/no fonts); the cooltype prefs are even more messy; so much for acro 6 Hans ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE | pragma@wxs.nl Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: +31 (0)38 477 53 69 | fax: +31 (0)38 477 53 74 | www.pragma-ade.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- information: http://www.pragma-ade.com/roadmap.pdf documentation: http://www.pragma-ade.com/showcase.pdf -------------------------------------------------------------------------
