Re: [NTG-pdftex] pdftosrc from Tex Live 2007 packages
Hi,
pdfTeX contains sources for pdftosrc and ttf2afm, but "make all" in
pdftexdir does not compile them:
# pdftex_bin = pdftex ttf2afm pdftosrc
pdftex_bin = pdftex
A user of TeXLive in Debian complained that pdftosrc is missing, and at
a first glance I thought that the lines above were all that needs to be
changed. But then I found that ttf2afm is built in TeXLive
nevertheless, by some other dependencies probably (it seems to be built
from "make ctangle", hm, strange).
Is there a rationale for enabling one but not the other? You don't
know, by chance, the clean way to enable pdftosrc, don't you?
Interestingly, the manpage for pdftosrc is still there:
"R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar"
File Path Package ===========================================================-================= /usr/share/man/man1/pdftosrc.1.gz texlive-extra-utils
but no indication of an executable.

They are available as targets in web2c. Why they got lost in pdftexdir (it was there in 1.30), I honestly don't know. I'll reenable them in pdftexdir. Best Martin

Martin, I'm amazed that you don't remember. Because *you* and Thanh decided that it is obsolete because you don't need it yourself and you decided that people should use pdfTk instead. It was a bad decision. Martin, as far as I remember *you* suggested to remove it and Thanh agreed. Dig out the old emails. I remember this very well because someone told me that he had been very upset because people who do not use this program decided that it should be removed but complaints from people who actually use the program had been ignored.
I'll reenable them in pdftexdir.
Thanks. It's a nice and useful tool. As you do it: Is there already a man page for that tool? Is http://www.amasol.de/~preusse/pdftosrc/pdftosrc.1 still of any use or is it broken anyway? Thanks, Hilmar -- People who make no mistakes do not usually make anything. http://www.hilmar-preusse.de.vu/

Yes. We have one and distribute it; the current devel version is in our svn at http://foundry.supelec.fr/plugins/scmsvn/viewcvs.php/trunk/doc/man/pdftosrc.1?root=pdftex&view=log
http://www.amasol.de/~preusse/pdftosrc/pdftosrc.1 still of any use or is it broken anyway?
It's different. :-) We'll see what we can use. Best Martin
