Dear Ross, if the font you are using contains a glyph for /space, it should be sufficient to type \char 32 somewhere in your document and the /space should appear within the font subset. There is probably no \space in Computer Modern but a macro can always steal a /space from another font. I assume that there is a /space in Computer Modern Typewriter.
