These "faked typewriter fonts" are crap indeed. And they are extremely ugly. I'm still wondering what they are good for.
Package listings. It's needed for source code listings, where vertical alignment is important. However the behaviour of package listings can be configured, e.g. columns=flexible and other settings, see documentation. Yours sincerely Heiko Oberdiek --
