With the patch, and enabled by \pdfminorversion=5, and with luck, pdfetex produces e. g. from its WEB source a PDF file with size 5.97 MByte instead of 11.2 MByte without object streams. Object stream writing is now controlled by primitive \pdfobjcompresslevel = 0...3 (/pdfobjectstreams primitive removed). 0 = no object streams at all, 1 = compress objects excluding the ones from embedded PDF files (for handling of problematic PDF files) and /Info dictionary (for legibility), 2 = also compress objects from embedded PDF files, but leave /Info uncompressed, 3 = compress everything.
