When they occur as \hyphenchar, or as a single character (e.g. \char123), everything's fine. With the EC fonts, the same happens for some quote characters. This does not happen with other font sizes. Also, it somehow seems to depend on the fonts preloaded in the format file. If I change this line in preload.ltx: \DeclarePreloadSizes{OT1}{cmr}{m}{n}{5,7,10} so that the font for size 10 will be loaded first, and recreate the format, all is well. When they occur as \hyphenchar, or as a single character (e.g. \char123), everything's fine. With the EC fonts, the same happens for some quote characters. Hi, is it intentional, that in the PDF file the /Producer and /PTEX.Fullbanner keys mention only "...pdfTeX..." even when pdfeTeX is used? And the etex "2.2" does not appear either. Similar with the \pdftexbanner. Regards, Hartmut

Only thing i found out is that the particular line with the manual hyphen ends with a disc_node (type 7), but the other lines seem to end with a vlist_node (type 1), whatever that means. And the automatic hyphens have a right_pw of 163840, whereas the manual one has zero there. No clue how to trace this further. Regards, Hartmut
