Outside math I think the solution is \inframed, but I don't know if
that works here.

Mojca et al, This seems to do what I want. I wanted the strikeout just a bit longer. \startuniqueMPgraphic{strikeme} draw (-1,-1)--(OverlayWidth+1,OverlayHeight+1) withpen pencircle scaled 1pt withcolor red; \stopuniqueMPgraphic \defineoverlay[strikeme][\uniqueMPgraphic{strikeme}] \def\strikeout#1{\mframed[frame=off,background=strikeme]{#1}} I tried working with offset (instead of attacking the graphic as I did), but that raised the numbers.
