Help with LaTeX -> ConTeXt & book typesetting
Hi, I'm recently trying to get ConTeXt typesetting my books like with LaTeX before (or better). But I can't solve some problems ... Maybe someone can assist me? o How do I get the chapter number into the heading? I've tried \setupheader[before=\viii,style=normal] \setupheadertexts[chapter] but this only puts the chapter title into the heading o How can I get something similar to LaTeX? \fancyhead[C]{% {\sffamily\footnotesize \leftmark \pdef\next{\rightmark}% \ifx\next\empty\else\ \textbullet\ \rightmark\fi}% } which will put the chapter mark centered in the headings, and if there is a sectionmark then a bullet & sectionmark too. o How can I typeset the chapter title across both columns in a two-column setup? o How can I tell ConTeXt the distance between columns? Or should I define only the columnwidth? How? My first defintion looks like \setuplayout[width=358dd,lines=46,topspace=11mm,backspace=17mm, margin=0cm,marking=on,location=middle,grid=yes,header=12bp, headerdistance=18bp,footer=12bp,footerdistance=11mm] o How can I tell ConTeXt to balance the last page? I've tried something like \definecolumnset[two][n=2,tolerance=tolerant,distance=12bp] \setupcolumnset [two][balance=yes] but this doesn't work. o Is it possible to setup a project using only didot (or bp) point measurements? E.g., ((PAGE 2)) <King> 1 The King <> ((PAGE 3)) <> 1 The King <Queen> So that I can combine, say \setupheadertexts[][\KHead Queen][\KHead King][] -- which actually are just two different ornaments -- with your definition above for 'something'?

This is pdfeTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.20a-rc4-2.1 ConTeXt ver: 2004.8.15 fmt: 2004.9.8 (BTW I've already produced all expanded version with fontinst) But this really produces super ugly results! The expanded fonts are in the pdf but the line breaking is horrible. Probably I need at least rc7 or the standalone version of fptex of Sept, 9th?

If ConTeXt is using the new german spelling & hyphenation rules then: *§108* If ss stands for ß, then it will be hyphenated s-s. E.g., Grüs-se (instead of Grü-ße), heis-sen (instead of hei-ßen). *§109* The connection of consonants ch, ck, and sch, and also in foreign words with ph, rh, sh, and th will not be hyphenated in between if they stands for a single sound. E.g., Bü-cher, Zu-cker, ba-cken, Fla-sche, Ma-che-te, Pro-phet, Myr-rhe, Ca-shew-nuss, ka-tho-lisch. Best regards, Ulrich

sure, you can combine whatever you want you can also set up different header/footers for margins and edged and there are also top and bottom areas as well as a text area

you need to set up bodyfont environments for that (see font manual); the complicating factor in fonts is that math needs to be set up.

wait for the new pdftex (or grab a test versions soemwhere): it has auto expansion included, and there i sno need any more to create the instances yourself (doen within pdftex)!

Hi Hans, I do not how to correctly process heads containing some XML tags. AFAIK XML macros are mostly defined with \unxepand, maybe there something could be done? What is the problem -- assume XML like <chapter><title>Chapter <em>really</em> important</title></chapter> and a couple of XML parser definitions for chapter, title and em. And now, if <chapter><title> expands e.g. into \chapter{\XMLflush{title}}, the ConTeXt write out into *.tui file line: c \listentry{chapter}{1}{}{Chapter <em>really<em/> important}{1::0:0:0:0:0:0:0::1}{1} so the <em> stays unexpanded. Using tui file record back (in \placecontent, for example) results to string "Chapter <em>really<em/> important" as it is of course not passed through XML engine. What to do to get chapter title in tui expanded? BTW -- another problem with tui/tuo I described before some time (and nobody answered me :-( -- UTF encoded XML string are written into tui in form of expanded UTF characters (like \char 253) and backward usage of this strings leads to loss of spaces at the end of words. Yes, I know. Of course this is an improvement. But I've already set it up -- so why not use it? Nevertheless it seems to me that there're several problems still. I'm using now: This is pdfeTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.20a-rc7.2-2.2 ConTeXt ver: 2004.8.15 fmt: 2004.9.12 int: english mes: english Sometimes the hyphen is not protruded at all. BTW where do I define in ConTeXt my font specific microtypographic values? I experience the same, but I have no idea why the struts are necessary around \quotation and \quote. When the user needs them he should insert them hiself. Especially if it is not documented (is it?). Hi Hans, I should want to get text around float (a side float) with the caption positioned inside the margin. As I did not found such parameter(s) I peeked into source code. First, it seems to me, the \setupfloat making the sidefloat on existing predefined float do not work. If I state: \setupfloat[table][location=outer] \placetable{caption}... the table is properly placed, but the text do not float around. If I use: \placetable[outer]{caption}... everything is OK. Maybe I missed something, or this is an unpleasant feature or a small bug :-) For second, the first case, when the text does not float around, allows some caption hacking. After studying sources sufficient for my needs is to define minimalwidth=\rightmarginwidth and inside Command from \setupcaptions[command=...] move the box with proper content into the margin. But there are the stuffs: a) caption's width and minimalwidth do not work for sidefloat, as inner doparfloat always uses \wd\tempfloatbox. So the modifying width of caption is rather impossible. b) the Command gets \hbox with another boxes inside. One should be able to get the contents of theses boxes to reformat it (to correct width, aligntment etc.), but this is not trivial and at least this reuired writing a code highly dependent on current ConTeXt implementation of captions. This is not good and again it makes the caption handling difficult. Summary: I am able to (with some tricks) to put the caption in margin for pagefloats, but the text is not floating around, or I am able to get the text floating, but the caption is uncontrollable. For me, the solution could be to adopt the behaviour of pagefloat widths into sidefloat macro (and altough minimalwidth parameter is not the best name for exact width, it works fine :-). I missed something: "location=outer" in setupfloat affects position of float (but not text floating); if I use "default=outer", also the text floats correctly. Thanks, there the files are, cutf.xml and cutf.tex, which defines about (about is not in x-contml). I created simple sample using cont-ml. See the second about in result (PDF). I created PDF with: texexec --pdf --interface=cz cutf.xml --usemodule="xtag-utf,x-contml,cutf" ----- I have more complicated DTD/XML and in this (moreover) described \char xxx and space colapsing problem appears. Now I know more: I use in DTD form <section><entry>...</entry><title>...</title>...</section> so I must <title> store for later use. This I do using \defineenvironmentsave[title] and the following \XMLflush{title}. The code for section is (simplified): \expanded{\chapter[\XMLop{label}]{\XMLflush{title}}} where \expanded (or another full expansion) is required. If \XMLflush is not fully expanded, it appears in tui like "\XMLflush{title}" or "\ifcsname..." (for partial expansion). So if I modify sent example to my DTD/XML I must expand titles fully and into tui they come not as UTF but as \char xxx (in proper encoding). But spaces go away. (And, of course XML parts in tui stays exactly the same as in sent files). I feel it is on the edge of current ConTeXt/XML parser, but maybe there is some way or trick I do not know :-) which solves this...
