Errors with MacTeX/TeXLive installation
I am trying out ConTeXt for the very first time, hoping to assess whether it's worth re-tooling from LaTeX for authoring scientific textbooks. I am using a fresh installation of TeX Live 2009 (installed via MacTex on a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.6), and I'm trying to process a sample file I downloaded from one of the ConTeXt web pages. Unfortunately, the process generates a couple of cryptic warnings ("Lua binary way out of date") and a fatal error ("can't find ...dcc/formats/cont-en.luc"). I wonder if someone can examine the input file and the log file (both attached) to help me understand what I have to do to clean things up and, if possible, why the TeX Live ConTeXt configuration doesn't work correctly "right out of the box" to begin with. Thanks, Grant

You may prefer to install MacTeX 2010 (this is just a link to testing page, but that's more or less what will get burnt into DVDs): http://ftp.cstug.cz/pub/tex/local/tlpretest/ http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeX_Live_2010 Mojca

(Following up to my previous message) ... or 3. Do what Mojca suggests, indeed :-) TeX Live 2010 being so close to the release is all the more reason not to tamper with your current installation. Arthur
Thanks for the advice. I'm glad to hear the problem I described was not just a manifestation of my own incompetence! I'm taking the suggestion of downloading MacTeX 2010 and will try that out as soon as it finishes downloading. - Grant

ConTeXt doesn't work in TeX Live 2009 (it will in the 2010 release that is being finalized). The culprit is that, as you have read, the LuaTeX binary (the program that is actually being run) doesn't match the version of the ConTeXt files. You have the choice between, either: 1. Replacing the LuaTeX program with a more recent version which you can download from http://www.luatex.org/download.html or 2. Installing the “Minimals” distribution (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals). Option 1 may seem simpler, but you will need a few steps to get started, and it can have side effects on the rest of your TeX Live installation, which is why I'd recommend you install the Minimals.
