Error: Illegal entry in bfrange block in ToUnicode CMap
I have a catalog.pdf Title: catalog Subject: Keywords: Author: Creator: ConTeXt - 2008.04.11 00:07 Producer: luaTeX-0.25.2 CreationDate: Mon Apr 14 14:58:34 2008 ModDate: 20080414 Tagged: no Pages: 158 Encrypted: no Page size: 595.276 x 841.89 pts (A4) File size: 70685151 bytes Optimized: no PDF version: 1.5 with this fonts name type emb sub uni object ID ------------------------------------ ------------ --- --- --- --------- MDCNZX+LMSans10-Bold CID Type 0C yes yes yes 13 0 IGGGUK+LMSans8-Regular CID Type 0C yes yes yes 14 0 GZMKLC+UnicodeSymbols CID TrueType yes yes yes 94 0 PTHJMN+LMTypewriter10-Regular CID Type 0C yes yes yes 855 0 WRYWGB+LMMathItalic8-Italic Type 1 yes yes no 957 0 After "distilling" with $> gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -dNOOUTERSAVE -dUseCIEColor -dProcessColorModel=/DeviceCMYK -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=a.pdf catalog.pdf -c quit I have $> pdffonts a.pdf Producer: GPL Ghostscript 8.62 CreationDate: Mon Apr 14 15:06:11 2008 ModDate: Mon Apr 14 15:06:11 2008 Tagged: no Pages: 158 Encrypted: no Page size: 595.28 x 841.89 pts (A4) File size: 24409214 bytes Optimized: no PDF version: 1.4 name type emb sub uni object ID ------------------------------------ ------------ --- --- --- --------- YPEQNS+LMSans8-Regular-Identity-H CID Type 0C yes yes yes 27 0 YXQHXP+LMSans10-Bold-Identity-H CID Type 0C yes yes yes 24 0 BCGFHD+UnicodeSymbols-Identity-H CID TrueType yes yes yes 139 0 VOBVYK+LMTypewriter10-Regular-Identity-H CID Type 0C yes yes yes 1144 0 IAAFVL+LMMathItalic8-Italic Type 1C yes yes no 1286 0 and many ( 4516 lines ) Error: Illegal entry in bfrange block in ToUnicode CMap What is this ? Maybe a xpdf bug ? (xpdf version 3.01) Note that gs has no problems with both files . My setup : This is LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.25.2-2008041413 ConTeXt ver: 2008.04.11 00:07 MKIV fmt: 2008.4.14 int: english/english -- luigi it's new . it's powerful . it's luatex . http://www.luatex.org
Is the error in the original pdf or in the redistilled one? in the redistilled one -- luigi it's new . it's powerful . it's luatex . http://www.luatex.org
Then it's easy: it is a ghostscript bug. or maybe a xpdf bug, given that ghostscript has no problem to show it.
BTW, what does this error mean ? -- luigi it's new . it's powerful . it's luatex . http://www.luatex.org

ToUnicode CMaps vectors in PDF are used to aid in searches, and they have a pretty strict "official" format. Your pdf file is apparently breaking one of the constraints. I am fairly certain of that, because some of the constraints are a cumbersome and seemingly arbitrary so it is likely that both gs and AR just ignore them. If you want to be really sure, you can send me the file, and I can have a precise look. Best wishes, Taco
