Hi all, I would like to report (with a rather bad humor) on an issue regarding the use of ConTeXt when one starts with TeXLive. Last week I was at a meeting of mathematicians and several people asked me to explain why I am using ConTeXt rather than LaTeX, and show them some of the features which (according to me) are fundamentally better thought and better designed. When some of my colleagues were convinced with what I showed them, since they had already a version of TeXLive installed on their computer, they wanted to try out ConTeXt on their own. So we tried to make some tests with their own installation of TeXLive and ConTeXt on their machine, and this is when the troubles began, because none of them could run ConTeXt out of the box… I confess that I am not at all a geek and my knowledge of ConTeXt is rather elementary, and just sufficient for my own (elementary) needs, therefore I could not solve the problems preventing those people to use ConTeXt. However, as those people told me, when using LaTeX they don't need any further technical knowledge, since any file can be typeset out of the box with an installation of TeXLive. So here is my frustrated question: why we cannot typeset a file « test.tex » written in TeX and using ConTeXt commands just by saying context test.tex in a terminal window (nor using a GUI front end) while one would be able to do that if that file were written using LaTeX commands? I know that it is possible to search on the web and find an answer regarding the steps one should take to enable ConTeXt from TeXLive, but it is not natural to expect people come to ConTeXt if they cannot use it out of the box. By the way, just for testing I installed TeXLive 2018, and could not use ConTeXt out of the box… (and I don't remember what I should do to enable it…). Indeed it is always possible to install a standalone version of ConTeXt on one's machine, but this pushes us to behave like a sect in the TeX community. I don't know to whom I should write to have ConTeXt enabled in TeXLive when one installs it: can anyone give me a hint? Best regards to all of you, especially those who do an incredible lot of work to develop ConTeXt and, who deserve to be better known among TeX users. Otared K.
Hi Otared, Since it works for me just fine (TL2018), a wild guess is that the installed TeXLive did not install the context scheme at all? Best wishes, Taxo

Hi Taco, Actually context, luatex, lualatex and latex are all installed by TL2018 but the only one NOT working is context. This discourages many people to experiment with context before installing a standalone version. Best regards: OK

I haven't used context that comes with texlive so I tried doing so on a new computer (which means that there were no left overs from previous texlive installs). I am on archlinux. First, some sanity checks: $whereis context context: /usr/bin/context $pacman -Qo =context /usr/bin/context is owned by texlive-core 2017.46770-1 Now, I tried compiling a file: $context test resolvers | trees | analyzing 'home:texmf' mtx-context | warning: no format found, forcing remake (commandline driven) resolvers | resolving | configuration files already identified resolvers | resolving | loading configuration file 'selfautodir:/share/texmf-dist/web2c/texmfcnf.lua' resolvers | resolving | resolvers | resolving | locating list of 'home:.texlive/texmf-config' (runtime) (tree:///home:.texlive/texmf-config) resolvers | methods | resolving, method 'locators', how 'uri', handler 'tree', argument 'tree:///home:.texlive/texmf-config' resolvers | trees | locator 'home:.texlive/texmf-config' not found resolvers | resolving | locating list of 'home:texmf' (runtime) (tree:///home:texmf) resolvers | methods | resolving, method 'locators', how 'uri', handler 'tree', argument 'tree:///home:texmf' resolvers | trees | locator '/home/adityam/texmf' found resolvers | resolving | hash 'home:texmf' appended resolvers | resolving | locating list of '/etc/texmf' (cached) resolvers | methods | resolving, method 'locators', how 'uri', handler 'file', argument '/etc/texmf' resolvers | files | file locator '/etc/texmf' found as '/etc/texmf' resolvers | resolving | locating list of '/var/lib/texmf' (cached) resolvers | methods | resolving, method 'locators', how 'uri', handler 'file', argument '/var/lib/texmf' resolvers | files | file locator '/var/lib/texmf' found as '/var/lib/texmf' resolvers | resolving | locating list of 'selfautoparent:texmf-project' (cached) resolvers | methods | resolving, method 'locators', how 'uri', handler 'file', argument 'selfautoparent:texmf-project' resolvers | files | file locator 'selfautoparent:texmf-project' not found resolvers | resolving | locating list of 'selfautoparent:texmf-fonts' (cached) resolvers | methods | resolving, method 'locators', how 'uri', handler 'file', argument 'selfautoparent:texmf-fonts' resolvers | files | file locator 'selfautoparent:texmf-fonts' not found resolvers | resolving | locating list of '.' Hi, It is interesting (and a bit depressing) that my TL2018 install worked out of the box on my mac. Mine was a straight ‘tlnet’ install, but I did install into a directory where I have write permissions. Mostly so I would not have to mess with sudo, but I now suspect that made a big difference (/opt/local/texlive is writable by me). Sorry, I have no clue what is going on with that systemd folder either. Last time I had anything to do with it, Mojca did the context-for-tl stuff, I assume that is still the case, and she is also on a mac normally. Perhaps she can help... Best wishes, Taco

That was a distribution screw up. I did the following test using docker: 1. Install full texlive (it is a 3 GB install!) $docker pull sumdoc/texlive-2017 2. Run Docker (here /tmp/context folder contained a few context files) $docker run -it -v /tmp/context:/home -w /home sumdoc/texlive-2017 /bin/bash 3. On the docker prompt, run #context test.tex Context regenerated the formats and compiled the files. So context works out of the box on texlive 2017. How to make sure that texlive distributions on major linux distributions work out of the box is a separate issue. I am not sure what archlinux is doing differently that a systemd service for setting color profiles is being called. Aditya

I got errors, but then I updated the application 'TeX Live Utility' in /Applications/TeX/, and then it worked. So run this program, and also regularly for updates. Even though the distribution is only released once a year, it is possible to keep packages up-to-date.
Perhaps it is useful that I mention that this is a MkIV problem on my iMac with TeXLive (2018 version). Using MkII, also with XeTeX, everything ran right out of the box. For MkIV, I had to run a program to let LuaTeX find all the fonts, and then it worked. Robert

If I disable the colord.service through systemd, then context format is generated correctly, and context can compile the file. Once the format has been generated, the colord.service can be enabled again and the context compiles correctly. So, I'll say that the arch version of texlive also works out of the box. Aditya

last week someone was sitting next to me who tried that and it just worked ... ok, installing the whole of tex live took a while (btw, when you install the lot there is an issue with the speed of making the file database .. somehow it's quite slow compared to the garden variant)
Indeed it is always possible to install a standalone version of ConTeXt on one's machine, but this pushes us to behave like a sect in the TeX community.
just come up with arguments like: - it's small and installs easily - you can also update to the latest greatest - it doesn't interfere with existing tex live(s) - that includes the just released fonts - it's also faster
I don't know to whom I should write to have ConTeXt enabled in TeXLive when one installs it: can anyone give me a hint?
probably to Mojca
Best regards to all of you, especially those who do an incredible lot of work to develop ConTeXt and, who deserve to be better known among TeX users. Hi Hans, Thanks for your attention and your remarks, which are full of good sense. My point, as confirmed by Aditya, is that context should work without any other user intervention when TL is installed. I got your point about writing to MOjca: I'll do that off list to see whether this can be fixed and how. Best regards: OK

Yes, and nobody is saying anything to the contrary. It is a bug that it is not working; not a deliberate action, or evidence of sectarian behaviour.

Actually, rather than bothering Mojca who is already overburdened, you should report it to the TeX Live list (http://tug.org/mailman/listinfo/tex-live) where you’ll be able to reach the people responsible for TeX Live, and many more. Best, Arthur
