Thanks to all who replied, including Matthias Weber, Hans Hagen and Patrick Gundlach. The problem was fixed as soon as I used Expert mode in G. Wierda's TeX i-installer to install the 2004 branch (rather than the default 2003 package). I then used the ConTeXt updater i-installer and everything seems to be fine again. --shiv--
