I think font-ini.tex(?) has a small error in it (working with the 23-okt beta). When switching to {\xi } something different from {\xii}, {\x} etc. happens; xi doesn't seem to work. I have looked into font-ini.tex but could not find the source of the problem. Hans van der Meer
