Re: [NTG-context] Workshop at FrOSCon
From: juh+ntg-context@mailbox.org
My main problem is that I never used Windows in my life and have no idea how to help people with installing lmtx on this platform.
juh
I'm a beginner in context (and not a programmer by profession) and installing lmtx on windows was very easy for me. the steps are on the wiki https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Installation and it is as easy as it is written there. I've been using context thanks to these installation steps on win 7 and win 10. I'm not sure what the targetgroup at the conference is, but if the people there ever used a commandline, they should be good to go. once you install, you open the commandline using Win+R and then type "cmd". Once in the cmd, you only need to know the command "cd" (change directory) to navigate to the folder where the .tex source is, so e.g. "cd c:\users\x\documents\" and then run "context test.tex". That is the manual way. I use sublimetext as text editor and made a new build for it, that when I press Ctrl+B saves all changes in the open file/folder and runs context on the open file and previews the pdf in mupdf that is zoomed to be 1:1 paper:print on my dpi. It's a bit like TeXworks, just press button and see the pdf, because mupdf automatically overwrites the open pdf without asking. It's 4 hours by train for me to Bonn and I'm not sure whether I'm a good candidate to teach people context due to my low skill, but I can surely teach you how to install lmtx on windows if you like (we could call or sth). Best, Andrej

Thanks a lot for this offer. Due to my hesitation and my holidays I submitted the workshop after the deadline of the FrOSCon CFP so I guess that there won't be a ConTeXt workshop this time. But you never know, often deadlines were extended. I'll keep you updated. juh

My workshop was accepted. What shall I cover? It's a workshop for beginners? - Installation - Hello word What would you cover? Project structure? Style creation? I think one part will be: Where to find documentation? Any hints appreciated. And if you want to join me in the workshop you're welcome! juh

In my experience, most participants will know LaTeX, i.e. you must tell them to forget everything they believe to know about TeX ;P – Layout, i.e. \setuppapersize, \setuplayout and \showlayout – Structure, i.e. \startchapter, \startitemize – Images & Floats, i.e. \externalfigure, \startplacefigure Project structure makes sense if you have more than one hour.

Yes. Tell them there will be a German book next year (I hope...); I’ll send you a link off-list. I guess your Markdown workflow might interest some.
And if you want to join me in the workshop you're welcome!
Sorry. Hraban

Oh, and don’t tell them that ConTeXt LMTX is much, much faster than any LaTeX, because that’s a secret ;) (On the German list TeX-D-L some are discussing if LuaTeX is better than pdfTeX/XeTeX, and some are complaining that LuaLaTeX is too slow, of course...) HR

- context is slow - context needs too much memory - context is like plain - context can't do math - context uses a runner for management - context has no documentation - context is not upward compatible - context can't be used in production we need two more for a top-ten Hans ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: 038 477 53 69 | www.pragma-ade.nl | www.pragma-pod.nl -----------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you – I can’t remember you ever announced that? I quickly looked through it and, of course, found a few things that I didn’t cover yet. Hraban

I did in 2018 and in return you send me an early version of your book.

Most of the things in there I learned on this mailing list. Greetings Axel

Ok, it’s been a while.
I quickly looked through it and, of course, found a few things that I didn’t cover yet.
Looking deeper, I also found a lot of errors.

Me too. And of course at ConTeXt meetings (hint: https://meeting.contextgarden.net/2022/) Hraban

Just for the record: luametatex is *not* optimized for context, it just provides (rather generic) stuff not present in other engines that we can benefit from. That said: of course after decades of context we know what is missing in tex that we could benefit from, and we do. One distinction between luatex and luametatex is that we delegate some more to lua. The reworked math engine is something that is probably very contextisch if only because other macro packages are locked into "chisseled in stone ams (and alike) math as the only thruthful and accepted by publishers way to do it" so there the "optimized" sort of applies, in the sense that we can fully benefit from it as well have extra features that make certain things possible.
