I can't seem to set a background on one of my paragraphs. I'm using: \definetextbackground[intro][backgroundcolor=gray, location=text, color=blue] along with \starttextbackground[intro] paragraph \stopbackgroundtext in the body of the document. I got the impression from one of the manuals that \setuptextbackground was only necessary in the case of multiple \definetextbackground statements, but I tried including it anyhow. Still, I'm getting no background whatsoever.

Since I had to include \setupcolors, I must have mkii (I didn't know before). Neither of your example files worked properly for me. The text was blue, but there was no background at all. I'm going to try to figure out how to update to mkiv, maybe it will help.

I don't know what "minimals" means. http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals
I've tried both of the commands you listed for mkii; neither gave me a background.
ok, this example must work under mkii. If not, can be a bug. \setupcolors[state=start] \definetextbackground[intro][backgroundcolor=gray, location=text,color=blue] \starttext \starttextbackground[intro] \input knuth \stoptextbackground \stoptext -- luigi

Still no background. can you post the log ?
I downloaded context from an Ubuntu repository, so I'm not sure if it is a minimal package or not. Since it installed things on my path, I assume that it isn't. Can be: if $>context works than you have a mkiv. BTW, it's not the recommended way to install a minimals, so there is no support for it.

The context command doesn't work at the command line. Here is the log; I'm not sure how much of it is useful. Try adding background=color key as well to setuptextbackground Aditya
