The normal xtables don’t like to be called from inside other constructs. Use this instead: \startxmlsetups xml:table \message{xml:table} \startembeddedxtable \startxrow \startxcell one \stopxcell \startxcell two \stopxcell \stopxrow \stopembeddedxtable \stopxmlsetups Best wishes, Taco
