the startfigure problem is solved in the next release, it had to do with added grouping in floats (needed for some fancy things); there will be more side float placement options, including half margin-text things, alignment, etc, also, backgrounds behind running text (the definetextbackground thing) will work in normal text as well as floats, tables and alike.
