I this may explain the dvi instead of pdf problem, but you also have a configuration problem with mtxrun (that is not unheard of at all ...)
# have coffee
all good so far, no need to repeat any of it
export PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/context/bin:/usr/local/context/tex/texmf-osx-intel/bin
You don't actually need /usr/local/context/bin in the PATH I think, but it should be harmless. Mojca?
export TEXMF=/usr/local/context/tex/texmf export TEXMFMAIN=$TEXMF
This is BAD. You definately do not want to set TEXMF to that one directory, and do not need either of the variables at all. After removing these two from your environment and a manual $ luatools --generate all should be well. If it is not, you should post the output of $ env MTX_INPUT_TRACE=3 context test.tex for debugging purposes. Background information: It fails so miserably because if you set TEXMF, it should have a small list of different locations, not just /usr/local/context/tex/texmf In fact, most files live in /usr/local/context/tex/texmf-local But simply not setting the variable at all should work just fine. Best wishes, Taco
Hi Taco,
Thanks for the quick response. I unset TEXMF, TEXMFMAIN and did `luatools
--generate'. I also throw context/bin out of my PATH.
First thing I notice: I can run context again (without parameters)
But with test.tex, it still does not work:

No, there are two files, both with extensions. The human readable one is actually called "01ff2a12d1aaf66ed1ecab879ab73b31.tma", so that's not it. It appears 'mtxrun' is unwilling to run the 'context' script (it found it alright, it is /usr/local/context/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/lua/mtx-context.lua so the discovery of the script itself is now ok. Perhaps the formats are still missing (I am guessing sometimes because I do not have a clear overview of what first-setup.sh does/doesnt do). Can you try if $ context --make --compile cont-en runs? Otherwise, maybe it can't find the "luatex" executable (which would be really odd, but who knows ...). Does $ luatex --version work? Finally, I find it odd that it only "sees" the texmf-context subtree, but that could be a feature of the new minimals. can you see what $ luatools context.tex gives back? Best wishes, Taco

hi all,
I updated my context minimals today, and I have exactly the same error , except for the paths (but I had not burak's previous one).
At least I am not alone :-) I think the previous problems were due to my confusing the system by setting TEXMF wrongly. So, here is a short update: sourcing in setuptex does not help. Burak-Emirs-MacBook-Pro:/tmp/testlua.b buraq$ . /usr/local/context/tex/setuptex /usr/local/context/tex Setting "/usr/local/context/tex" as TEXROOT. Burak-Emirs-MacBook-Pro:/tmp/testlua.b buraq$ . /usr/local/context/tex/setuptex /usr/local/context/tex Setting "/usr/local/context/tex" as TEXROOT. So ctxdata is not there ('a nil value')... if you look at line 563, you see (this line is not indented like the others): 563 ctxdata.flags.inputfile = filename -- is this right Two observations: * I think the answer to the comment is "no" :-D * just a bit further up, lines 526-531, there is code that explicitly asks whether ctxdata is there... 526 if ctxdata then 527 -- todo: interface 528 for k,v in pairs(ctxdata.flags) do 529 environment.setargument(k,v) 530 end 531 end I don't know lua, but it seems that ctxdata being absent is possible, and the problem could be fixed by account for the case that ctxdata is not set... what do you think? Hello, I get exactly the same error, but to Burak - before you give up with installation, you can use texexec --lua test.tex That one should work. Also, if it would have been critical, there's always a chance to run first-setup.sh --context=current or first-setup.sh --context=YYYY.MM.DD to revert to an older stable distribution. Mojca

This is indeed a luatex bug (of sorts), because the message is misleading. This message should have read something like this: "You can't use PDF features in DVI mode."
* I'm broken. Please show this to someone who can fix can fix
And this should be: "No really, I meant that. Stop trying already." -- However, the actual problem is that mkiv is mistakenly running luatex in dvi mode instead of pdf mode (i just saw your other message)
