Help Wanted: Apple Preview.app and Metafun Manual
Hi all, We need your help in tracking down a possible bug with the Apple Preview.app when printing the Metafun manual (pdf) http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/metafun-p.pdf from page 37 onward. We (and Apple) would appreciate it very much if some of you would do tests on different printers and submit a report on the survey form posted at http://latex.yauh.de/survey/survey.php?SURVEY_ID=14 Josh Carter made the original discovery and did tests on the following: ----------- HP Color LaserJet 4600dn - Printing page 1-100ish (my original print job), A4 paper scaled to letter: fuzzy pages from page 37 (physical 41) on. - Page 37 only (scaled): fuzzy. - Page 37 only (A4 cropped to letter): fuzzy. HP LaserJet 4050n: - Page 37 only (scaled): fuzzy. - Page 37 only (cropped): fuzzy. Epson Stylus Photo 2000P (note: NOT a PostScript printer): - Page 37 only (cropped): fuzzy. All were printed from my PowerBook G4/550; 512MB/30GB; MacOS X 10.3.2; latest available drivers for Color LaserJet 4600 and Epson 2000P, built-in system driver for LaserJet 4050. I also verified that Acrobat 6 prints correctly on the 4050, but I didn't try the other printers. ----------- Our thanks to Stephan Hochhaus for setting up the MacTeX survey page. -- wendy for the TUG MacTeX Technical Working Group http://www.tug.org/twg/mactex/
Hi, I printed metafun-p.pdf using Preview.app on an HP Laserjet 4100 dtn (black and white) and noticed that beginning from page 37 (physical page number 41) of that document the output is fuzzy. Also I noticed that it takes a much longer time to print the pages 37 onward (for instance the 14 pages from 37--50 took three times more time than the 36 pages 1--36). Printing the same document with Acrobat 6, or TeXShop presents no such problems. Best regards: OK

Indeed. I got the same blurry. results... Otared, be sure to fill out the survey at the website with your printer details... In other, related news, I notice that Apple's Preview.app has trouble with ConTeXt-generated (er, pdfTeX, I suppose) bookmarks. They appear fine, but the bookmarks, when clicked, don't go to the right places. Bookmarks from other sources are fine in Preview, and the ConTeXt/pdfTeX bookmarks are fine in Acrobat. Anyone else notice this behavior? adam -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Adam T. Yes, following your advice I did fill out the survey.

I tried several files containing bookmarks (such as the file "show-fil.pdf") but the links have the right behaviour. Adam, could you please send me a test file with which you have noticed such a problem? (You may send the example file off list). Best regards: OK

Sorry I wasn't clear. I meant the bookmarks in the document outline view, and not general within-document or web links.

If you open the result (from below) in Acrobat, the outline of bookmark appears and you can go to the page by clicking on a section. In Preview (from 10.3), the bookmarks appear, but aren't clickable. Other PDFs (like <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Printing/Conceptual/ PDF_Workflow/PDF_Workflow.pdf>) show the bookmarks, and make them clickable as well. \setupinteraction[state=start] \placebookmarks[chapter,section,subsection] \setupinteractionscreen[option=bookmark] \starttext \chapter{La} \chapter{Lo} \section{Li} \chapter{Lu} Keats takes Kate's skate. \stoptext -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Adam T. Hi Adam, Actually I tried the file with a slight modification (see below) and I don't see, regarding the clickability of the resulting pdf file, any difference between what happens in Acrobat 6 and Preview.app (version 2.1.0): the bookmarks obtained from "\placelist[chapter,section]" are clickable in both applications. (However I don't see where and how the commands "\placebookmarks[chapter,section]" and "\setupinteraction[..." acts on the pdf file... I mean the result is the same with or without those two lines, see below). Best regards: OK %% here is the modified test file you sent me \setuplist [chapter, section] [alternative=a, interaction=all, before=, after=] \setupinteraction[state=start] \placebookmarks[chapter,section,subsection] % if commented out, nothing changes \setupinteractionscreen[option=bookmark] % if commented out, nothing changes \starttext \placelist[chapter,section] \chapter{La} \chapter{Lo} \section{Li} \chapter{Lu} Keats takes Kate's skate. \stoptext

OK, I'm still not making myself clear. By "Bookmarks," I mean the widgets pictured in the two attached files. Although they are visible in Preview, they are not clickable. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Adam T. Ooops... I am so sorry for having been stupid... I didn't know the meaning of "bookmarks" in this... context. You are right: also here, the bookmarks appear in Preview.app but they are not clickable. May I ask you the following: is there a way in ConTeXt to choose the transition mode between pages while showing slides? (Transition can be chosen under "Preferences" in Acrobat). Best regards: OK

\setuppagetransitions[5] % should work but doesn't... Grüßlis vom Hraban! -- http://www.fiee.net/texnique/

Many thanks! I tried a couple of values \setuppagetransitions[5] \setuppagetransitions[4] \setuppagetransitions[3] and it does work! Great... Best: OK

Thank you Otared and Adam and any others on this list who completed the survey and/or sent replies. The bug was revealed by William Adams et al. on the "TeX on Mac OS X" list and a report has been sent to our Apple contacts. The results are posted on http://www.tug.org/twg/mactex/surveys/ - Printing Tests (which reveals the bug) - Results of Survey (listing all the printers tested) - Statistical Report - Discussion Threads The quick response was very much apreciated. /// wendy
