what about pdftotext from xpdf?: /opt/xpdf/current/bin/pdftotext lettrine.pdf - | wc -w 1672 It's not that accurate, but perhaps it is sufficient? Patrick -- ConTeXt wiki and more: http://contextgarden.net

Perfect. That's certainly sufficient for my needs. I had never looked at xpdf before because of the general level of PDF support on MacOSX, but those associated tools look quite handy.
