but i admit it needs some thought ... outer level only but that is also pretty much an engine thing then (no big deal but ... needs pondering)

Thanks, I guess that should be added to this page: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Tabulate I'll add it to my list of todos..., but just to make sure the explanation will be correct: what exactly is happening here? The tabulate environment will "inherit" the outer environments setups, but why does this result in the overprinting?
