I'm not sure which fix you mean but this works:

\def\dealwithmathtextencoding
  {\expanded{\everyhbox{\the\everyhbox\noexpand 
\fastenableencoding{\currentencoding}}}%
   \expanded{\everyvbox{\the\everyhbox\noexpand 
\fastenableencoding{\currentencoding}}}%
   \def\dealwithmathtextencoding{\let\characterencoding 
\nocharacterencoding}%
   \dealwithmathtextencoding}
...
This solves the problem, but I'm not sure if it's the right fix and it
also needs to be fixed for \startintertext:
   \def\intertext#1%
     {\noalign{\dointertext{\rm#1}}}
Please don't introduce hard coded font switches.
