Andrea, I'm not a real expert, but what I've understood: \strut is an invisible character with no width but the maximum lineheight (cont-eni, p. 72). TeX discards glue such as \vfill or \hfill at the beginning of horizontal or vertical boxes, so you have to fool it into believing there is something before your \vfill.
