what is wrong with
-------------------------------------------------- \setuppagenumbering[location=] \starttext \setupheadertexts[text][section][chapter] \dorecurse{8}{\chapter{chapter - \recurselevel} \expanded{\chapter.... }
look at the *.tui file for the unexpanded case.
