\placefigure[bottom]{}{\externalfigure[hacker][width=\textwidth]} works just fine, I get "top" placement with \placefigure[bottom]{}{\externalfigure[hacker][width=\paperwidth]}
Works here with the code below. The same result with and without adding "force". Result attached.
