one complication is that

$ \autofences x | \frac{a}{x}$

$ \autofences ( \frac{a}{x} + b | x )$

should also work (lone middles)

This example also shows a new \autofences feature and widehats
    (widetilde and widecheck also work that way) that overcome limitations
    in fonts, so

these are basically radicals (like sqrt) with two sided symbols.
