However, this brings up a more general issue (for Hans, especially). The symbol is called a guillemet, a diminutive of Guillaume (Le Be), the typographer. It has nothing to do with the French word for word, mot. :-)
I guess you are right, but the Postscript Name for this glyph is eg. guillemotleft, the unicode name (U+00AB) is 'Left Pointing Guillemet', so guillemot is a slightly reasonable name for that glyph, even if it is wrong ...
