that's because ascimode messes up some catcodes .. you can try this (in 
cont-new.tex):

\prependtoks
     \setcatcodetable\ctxcatcodes
\to \everyMPgraphic

and then do lots of tests with and without asciimode so see if this 
doesn't interfere
