Another option is to use the `location` key for `\externalfigure`:

\useMPlibrary[dum]
\defineexternalfigure[dummy][width=4cm,height=3cm]
\setuplayout[grid=yes]

\showgrid

\starttext

Default: \externalfigure[dummy]

1: \externalfigure[dummy][location=top]\quad
2: \tbox{\externalfigure[dummy]}

\stoptext
