I don't know .. tests must show this. I never use(d) XeTeX myself apart from generating a format to if that works. I have no problem with changing something given that it doesn't break something.
I’m going to drop it until somebody complains, it is such an obscure feature, not documented anywhere and no other engine supports such quoting. Regards, Khaled
