Ah, here's a conflict: XeTeX doesn't have latin modern yet. (Needs to be converted to OpenType, with some special table enabled... JK hasn't documented it yet.) Do you have a switch to avoid the cmr-lm conversion? Also, something I just realised (thanks to Vit's example): XeTeX hasn't a clue when it comes to grid typesetting.
