Yes, that worked great. After looking at your solution, I vaguely remember that this had happened before. For the first row, "first" has worked "1" did not. It was so long back that I had forgotten about it.

weird but this works

\setupTABLE[row][first][align=middle,style=bold]

and you can now write

   \bTR

       \bTD Definition \eTD
   \eTR
