The error was due to

\startformula \startalign
  \NC ... \NC ... \NC ...\NC ... \NR
\stopalign \stopformula

I added m=2 to startalign and it works now. Actually, it should have 
failed, and the fact that it worked in the past (when I created this 
file) was a bug.
