Nested method definitions were added in ruby 1.8. Perhaps this bit
of code:

        if filter.gsub!(/^not:/,'') then
             def the_same(filter,filename)
                 not filter or filter.empty? or /#{filter}/ !~ filename
             end
         else
             def the_same(filter,filename)
                 not filter or filter.empty? or /#{filter}/ =~ filename
             end
         end

can be rewritten in some way that does require nesting?
