Someone some time ago suggested this:

OSFONTDIR="$TEXMFHOME/dummy_for_fonts"

export OSFONTDIR

put it in your .bashrc folder or whatever shell you are using and make an empty folder dummy_for_fonts in $TEXMFHOME.
