You can't use `\hskip' after \the. \obeyedspace ->\hskip \zeropoint \hbox to \onepoint {}\hskip \zeropoint <inserted text> \abc \dodoappendtoks ...EA \@@toks \the \@@scratchtoks } l.2 \appendtoks \abc \to \everystarttext No problem without the space after "\to".
