What is wrong with the way I am looking at this?
Nothing; the reasons are historical. When defining "left" and "right", the author thought of "raggedleft" (the text is ragged on the left) instead of "flushleft". To avoid confusion, you may want to use "flushleft" and "flushright" explicitly. Cheers, ~~ Ondra
