The cleanest way would be to write your own "submodule." It's easy; maybe just use one of the existing simpleslides-s-XXX.tex files and modify it; replace the lines \defineoverlay [simpleslides:background:horizontal] [\useMPgraphic{simpleslides:MP:horizontal}] with \defineoverlay [simpleslides:background:horizontal] [{\externalfigure[][width=...]}] Last semester, for the presentations in my class, I had defined a macro that would randomly pick one out of 25 pictures for every slide.
