BTW: Mojca has suggested to install a newer version of pdftex (currently 3.141592-1.21a-2.2) on the server. Which distribution would you prefer? The requirements:
* debian 3.1 (Intel) * no cdrom available, no ability to mount loopback devices * almost no space limit * I don't want to update the distribution more often then once a year.

Hmm, wouldn't it be best to just update pdftex alone, without anything else? You don't need any cdrom or loopbacks for that. Or what exactly do you mean when you say "distribution"? Is your server used for any TeX-related work other than providing the backend for the garden? Don't know if I'm making sense here, but that's what went through my head... Best Thomas
