Why wouldn't this be the case with any fontsize change? I guess because you have to change the \vskip each time. Well, in that case one could write a macro, but I have no idea how to write macros. Also, one could set up a definition \def\FontSkipSize{\vskip-12pt} and use that instead. Then you would only have to change the definition once. Of course, that begs the question.
