The new one gives

\dodoubleempty #1->\noshowargumenterror \doifnextoptionalelse {\dodoubletestemp ty #1} {\dodoublefakeempty #1} #1<-\dododocite

So, \doifnextcharelse vs \doifnextoptionalelse.

Any progress on this? I'm seeing the same behavior.
