As you see, the output of luatools --variables also gave the same output.

There may be something that is unknown to us in our system. For information, I use mac G5(OSX 10.4.10, PPC) and installed MacTeX 2007 version.

what is in line 1108 of your luatools?
I have the same error message on my wndows machine but the setuptex script solves this for me und LuaTeX is working. Wolfgang
