I think in mkiv one is supposed to use rather the \startalign...\stopalign structure, as in the following:

\startformula \startalign \NC t_{L,\text{early}} \NC = t_{L,\text{late}} = t_{L,\text{ray}} \NR \NC\NC = 6\ \mu m \NR \stopalign \stopformula
\stoptext
