      Neither option worked. I am now getting the famous error:

It may have something to do with the way gwTeX is structured:

gwTeX $ ls
bin             lib             texmf           texmf.local
include         man             texmf.cnf       texmf.pkgs
info            texdist         texmf.gwtex     texmf.texlive

BTW, to update context (if you are not behind a firewall) you can do
ctxtools --update
