you can install the version from the context garden alongside (independent) ... that way you're always up to date

Thanks for the tip. I have done such manual updates in the past, with package chasing including recursive packages, but a down period right now. Even a developer of Bison uses GCC from MacPorts. Perhaps there should be a live update of TeX Live instead.
