This happens when pdftex reads map files intended for dvipdfmx, and it normally means the TEXFONTMAPS setting in texmf.cnf is not correct. Here I have: TEXFONTMAPS = .;$TEXMF/fonts/map/{$progname,pdftex,dvips,}// Best wishes, Taco
