Not horizontal lines, but a gray header:
\starttable[o(3cm)|l|] \RL\SR \NC hmm \NC\AR \stoptable
Thank you Aditya for this workaround. If there is really no solution, I will make something with an empty first column.
You can also use bTABLE .. eTABLE macros. They now support the \NC .. \NR syntax. Aditya
